Some behavioral groups programs that are run by substance abuse counselors train intrapersonal and interpersonal skills.

  • be aware of nonverbal communication
  • talk aboult feelings
  • listen better
  • be assertive
  • refuse substances
  • handle criticisms
  • develop close relationships
  • improve social support networks

Intrapersonal skills taught include how to:

  • manage thoughts aboult drugs
  • be aware of anger and manage it well
  • cope with mood swings and implulses
  • sove problems
  • schedule activities
  • use relaxtion techniques

Two further areas that must not be forgotten are:

Many addicts tend To focus on the pleasurable and immediate effects of the drug, and ignore its destructive long term consequences .The desperate search for short-term relief to stressful situation can lead the addict to downplay the danger of drugs.
